ABC Learning Centre, a private kindergarten in Jamaica, was established in 1994 to nurture the ​hearts and minds of young children in and around the Green Island area. Pupils who left the ​school and moved on to primary school excelled and many went on to become teachers. Some ​have gone on to teach at colleges such as the University of the West Indies, Monigue Teachers' ​College and Bethlehem Teachers' College, and one of our first students is now a member of the ​Jamaica Constabulary Force. They are scattered, and some have emigrated.

Our History

The idea came to the founder of ABC Learning Centre in 1993 when she was sitting on her balcony and ​saw some school children who lived nearby playing in a field. She had her eye on a building in the ​neighborhood that was old, vandalized, and occupied by goats. She then wrote to Ben Clare, the MP at ​the time, asking him about the building and within a week he replied saying that we could continue to ​use it as it didn't actually belong to anyone. The owner built the building for his workers so it was here ​when they left. People called it a community center, but it wasn't maintained as a community center, it ​was just there, abandoned. It took her a whole year to fix it up and get it ready for September 1994 when ​it was ready to be opened. It started with 10 students, and by the end of the semester we had 25 ​students, plus a teacher and the founder herself. The founder was still working part-time, but on shifts. ​When she wasn't working, she stayed here, and then she left the other teachers, because the funding ​came from her salary, so she didn't give up her job when she started the school. As the years went by, ​the school grew to have a strong and active Parent Teacher Association and further renovations and ​extensions were made to the school and many new programs were extended.
